History

Mary Queen of Carmel Community is the oldest Discalced Carmelite Community in Atlanta. It was formed in the early 1990’s by individual Discalced Carmelites who lived in different parts of North Georgia and who, much like the early hermits on Mount Carmel, desired to meet in Community. Through their efforts, a location was found to accommodate the fledgling group, the Monastery of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit. They were granted Study Group status and Eleanor Rotondo, OCDS was appointed as President and Irene D. Jolly, OCDS was chosen as Formation Director. Under their guidance, the group grew and was canonically established on February 2, 2004, with the Mass of Canonical Erection being held on March 14, 2004. Canonical elections were held and Caroline McMahon, OCDS was selected to be the first Community President and Dona Warren, OCDS was chosen to be Formation Director. From then until the present, Mary Queen of Carmel OCDS Community has flourished under the spiritual guidance of the Carmelite Provincial Delegates and their appointed Spiritual Assistants to the Community, originally Father Tom Francis, OCSO and currently Father Gerard Gross, OCSO.

Meeting as Community

Mary Queen of Carmel Community meets monthly at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit, 2625 Hwy 212 SW, Conyers 30094, in Conyers, Georgia, usually on the second Sunday of each month. The meetings consist of community recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours, community Mass and time for meditation, study of the writings of the Carmelite saints and Doctors of the Church, and time for gathering in friendship.

Apostolate

Carmelite contemplative prayer is not a stagnate thing. Contemplative prayer leads souls to love like God and loving like God leads to action for the salvation of souls. Every Discalced Carmelite Community has an apostolate. Mary Queen of Carmel Community makes unique Scapulars, packages them in English and Spanish and distributes them to wherever they are requested.
